Pattachitra style of painting is one of the oldest and most popular tribal art forms of Odisha. The traditions of pattachitra paintings are more than thousand years old. Pattachitra is a general term for traditional, cloth-based scroll painting. The name Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words patta, meaning canvas, and chitra, meaning picture, painting done on canvas. This style of painting is manifested by rich colourful application, creative motifs and designs, and portrayal of simple themes. Most of these paintings depict stories of Hindu deities based on Hindu mythology and specially inspired by Jagannath and Vaishnava sect. All colours used in the Paintings are natural and paintings are made fully old traditional way by Oriya Painter. Making the patta is days long and tedious process before it becomes canvas of smooth and leathery surface to paint on. Then the paints are prepared from naturally available raw materials. The creation of the Pattachitra paintings is a disciplined art form, and painters maintain rigidity in their use of colours and patterns, restricting the colours to a single tone. In spite of limitations and bounded by rules, the painters come up with such remarkable paintings depicting stark emotional expressions. With the passage of time, this hand painted art of Pattachitra has gone through a commendable transition. Now the painters are carrying out Pattachitra paintings on tussar silk also and creating the wall hangings and showpieces.  The designs also have changed from traditional motifs, mythological stories to contemporary designs like Tree of Life, Gardenia Patta, Blossmed Flowers, etc.
